Praying for your Children/ grandchildren
The Lucas’ have entered a new phase of our lives where our children have not just grown up but are now married or planning to be married. It is an exciting time but a challenging time as our roles have parents have now changed.
While the role has changed, the praying for them has not changed but entered into a new phase.
Stormie Omartian has written a series of books The Power of Praying for .....”
Her recent book on praying for your adult children has given us some helpful insights to relate and pray for our adult children. Over the next few months, we will look at the issues of praying for our adult children.
As we pray for our children, there are things that we need to keep in mind.
1 You need to know that it never ends: Your parenting never stops and you never lose your children. Although there are different stages and seasons of parenting responsibilities, your heart and mind will always be with each one of your children for the rest of your life. When they are happy, you will be happy. When they suffer, you will suffer
.2. You need to know You can’t fix them: No matter what you would like to do to help, you cannot fix their problems. Only they and God can fix them. Too often parents have tried to fix their children’s problems and have caused more problems for themselves, for their child and their relationship with their other children. All you can do is listen!
3. You need to know that God can change everything: It is important that you leave your child in God’s hands. Like the Father in the prodigal son story in Luke 15, you need to let God do it his way. Sometimes your child has to be in the pig pen to realize that life is better at home. If you try and rescue them before that realization, the child will return to their old ways. Only God can make permanent changes in your child and sometimes it can take longer than you want or think
So how do you pray for your adult child?
Prayer is not telling God what to do. Prayer is partnering with God to see that His will be done for your child. You don’t have to fully understand what God’s will is in order to pray that His will be done.
Bring your child in prayer before God and ask God what you need to pray for and then pray it out loud.
